Math Mammoth {Mosaic Review}

image
  Math was always one of my favorite subjects in school! Unfortunately, my children do not have the same zeal for the subject.  Math comes easily to my oldest however he doesn’t like it.  The others hit all spots on the spectrum as far as liking it and not, it being easy and it being hard.  We have used the same curriculum with the exception of a couple of months for our second child.  My philosophy is if it works don’t change it.  Now my daughter isn’t picking up as quickly as her brothers with the math.  We all know that what works for one child will not necessarily work for the next.  When I was asked to review this curriculum by Mosaic Reviews I thought that maybe it would be a better fit for her.
  What is it?
  Math Mammoth is a math curriculum!  Math Mammoth has a few different options, allowing you  a complete curriculum or the Light Blue Series, work texts for specific topics, which is the Blue Series, and finally worksheets that come in grades 3rd thru 8th/9th that includes Algebra 1 otherwise know as the Gold Series.
The series themselves:
   The Gold Series
      This set consists of worksheets fro grades 3-8th or 9th that has 2 parts for each grade. Each worksheet focuses on one topic however has varied problems.  This series covers tops up to Algebra 1.  Each grade has a different set of 120-150 pages with problems that emphasize understanding the concepts and working the calculations.  You can click here to check out the different sets.
The Blue Series
     Each of the Blue Series books focuses on a few topics only so they do not encompass the entire year.  They are a great addition to your curriculum or to help brush up on things over a break from regular studies.  Each work text is written with the instructions and student work in the same book. You could also piece these books together to make a complete curriculum based on topics, however they also have a complete curriculum that you wouldn’t have to piece together yourself.

  Finally the Light Blue Series.
  This series is a complete elementary curriculum for grades 1-6.  Grades 1-5 are already aligned with common core standards.  (Grade 6 should be aligned by the end of the year).     Each grade level in the curriculum consists of two student worktexts, supportive material including answer keys, tests and additional cumulative reviews. The downloaded version also included an additional worksheet maker. You can click here to check out the different Light Blue Series levels.  Currently there is no Kindergarten or pre-algebra or above.  They are working hard to get those out during 2014.
     As you can see Math Mammoth is very versatile and can help is many ways. Not sure what level to start on?  They offer free placements tests that you can check out here. Not sure what option you want?   Below you will see a comparison between the Blue and Light Blue series from the website.

So what did I receive?  I received the Light Blue 2nd Grade Curriculum download, perfect to try with my daughter.  Now when it comes to school she is a self motivator.  It doesn’t matter if it is history, art, writing or math.  She asks daily if she can do her school work.  Such a relief from her big brothers who prefer lunch, recess and the end of the day as their favorite parts.  As far as the curriculum itself I like the layout of the curriculum.  They also give you several internet resources to help with the topics covered.  The colorful pages are fun to work on and with the downloaded version your child can do the pages right on the computer!  You don’t even have to print them out!   Check out this page.

  Do you see in the purple bar where it says add text comment? This allows your child to put the answers right there in the computer!  Then you can print them out for your records if you want to.  You of course can keep this little bit of info to yourself and use it as a reward or something of the sort as well Smile.   My daughter loved to put the answers in the computer instead of writing them out. In having this curriculum for the past month or so the only thing that I have come across that I am not crazy about is the regrouping.  I do not like to do math in that fashion.  We have always skipped over that step and done it the old fashioned way, or the way that I was taught.
