We choose virtues takes you into VirtueVille and introduces you to its adorable characters. Each card is printed with bright cheery colors and has a character on the front with a catchy name like Feather Heather and Piggy Bank Frank. Also on the front is a virtue like I am Patient. The back of the card contains am "I am" statement like "I make myself do the right thing", as well as an "I am NOT" statement like "I am NOT..wild, rowdy or disorderly and I don't expect other to control me. Finally a bible verse is listed.
I am loving the "I am and I am not" statements. I think that the words "I am/not" are very empowering, especially to a child. Do you remember when your child first realized that they could do something on their own? I think, "I do it...I do it" are some of the most used words in households with children. Heather uses the power of ownership, in my opinion, to teach children these virtues with the "I" statements. When the children review the statements they are teaching themselves what it means as well as memorizing it and putting it in their behavior "box" in their brains. The statements also make it easier as a parent to correct a child when they are not doing what they are supposed to do. When your child is being rowdy or disorderly a gentle reminder of Stop Sign Madeline is all they will need to nudge them in the right direction.
This program is recommended for children ages preschool (3yrs) through elementary age (5th grade), however the older children can learn or get a refresher course as they sit in or help teach the younger children.
